Smiling is the Best Medicine

Authored by Justin Yuen on Sep 15th 2010, 20:31

Long day today. I decided to take people's advice and use a smile as medicine. No, not laughter, because for me right now, it triggers a prolonged coughing fit. So, what do I think of in order to get that smile on my face?

My big sister, upon learning of my condition, flew back from serving in the Peace Corps all the way in Uganda just to see me. While here, she drew me a color pencil illustration of pun-based animal versions of my chemotherapy drugs pouncing on an huge, ugly, blobby, purple characterization of cancer.

Here's the secret to the smile: I imagine being put in a boxing ring with that huge purple cancer blob equipped with nothing but giant inflatable boxing gloves. Unfortunately, cancer fights dirty, so I'm getting beaten up left and right. I'll always get up though.

If any of you happen upon a giant purple cancer monster walking around, do me a favor and give it a good kick in the butt,

Hey, Justin, It's gooooood to hear that your condition is getting better. I really like the name of your Blog- JustLive!. Your positive attitude expressed in the blog also give me energy- to better enjoy live, work and to care my own health and care my family. Reading your blog is also a learning time for me - I often need to look up the vocabulary in the online dictionary because I am poor in vocabulary remembering. Really appreciate your sharing of your situation, hospital life, your cute image, and your positivity, which let me know the solution I could do when I encounter some difficulties some day. I can do little far away in Hong Kong, but to wish you get well as soon as possible. 祝你早日康复!Looking forward to your Pipa performance one day! Cheers~Winni

Justin -- you are amazing! It is so wonderful to read your various and daily blogs....keep up the good work, not only on the blog, but the smile on your face, the positive attitude, the incredible strength you display and your indomitable human spirit......AND send more photos! Leonardo wants more visual updates :)Big hugs and kisses from us in HK.Ming

Hi Justin, just wanted to send my healing wishes your way and add to the amazing amount of positive energy you are generating.

Hi Justin, you won't remember me - the last time we met you were drawing very sophisticated racing cars and playing Legos. Your mother is my "Big Cousin", a good friend and an inspiration in my life. Looks like she has raised a very courageous son who is also an inspiration to many (judging from all the comments). Your mom told me that to keep fit you would fall out of bed and do 50 pressups every morning. Now it probably feels like a major triumph to get out of bed at all. Loss of control is a very humbling experience... ( spent 3 months in hospital a long time ago, but those lessons have stood me in good stead). Your GuMa Betty is right - hang on -and in your darkest moments when you feel too weak to move a single muscle, when your whole being is consumed by nausea, when your body doesn't look or feel like it belongs to you, reach out, and God will be there. That's not to say that you're still going to need a shed load of grit, determination and courage - of which you seem to have a good supply! Have you got Faure's Requiem on your iPod? It was uplifting to me as I lay immobile. Keep bashing the ugly purple monster - your family and friends are cheering you on. With much love, Ellen

Justin-I look forward to your diary everyday - when you recover perhaps you should become a full time writer, instead of a "simple" computer whiz!! Uncle Selwyn and I are with you daily; and full of admiration for you and your Mom too - my favourite niece as you may know! Keep kicking the monster and since we are all joining in he will be knocked down soon. Love, A Ellie

Violence is not the answer... except in situations like this.

Tough 48hr? Probably an understatement. My autistic son sends you a (gross) joke. How do you make a stinkbomb? Get your friend's underpants and cover them in slimey green goo. Hang on in there. Love, Ellen

Here's a bribe: Recover. Come for Thanksgiving. You get your own bowl of cranberry sauce.

Keep fighting. You can do it, Justin

Hi Justin, How are you doing? Thinking of you and hope all is well at your end.

Justin! Long time no see...but I just wanted you to know that my family and I have been keeping you in our thoughts. We hope you'll be back to eating all the cookies soon. Also, I saw that purple thing and I kicked it in the shins (or at least, where the shins would probably be if it had them). I hope you are doing so as well. :)

Justin-Your dad called to let me know you are out of ICU. We are all so happy - we knew you would win! Be careful now and patient and take great care. Love, A Ellie
